Teaching Math in the Classroom
I believe in using anchor charts and hands-on manipulatives when teaching math, especially when students are learning new concepts. Students should also participate in collaborative learning at times to discuss different strategies and ideas about how to solve math problems. Students being able to discuss math helps them to understand concepts thoroughly.
Math In Focus is the mathematics curriculum used within Kentwood Public Schools. This program is based on the framework developed by Singapore Ministry of Education, which is upon the best practices from around the world. It uses problem solving as a main focus for mathematical learning, and I liked this program because it has technology to help teach lessons, includes manipulatives for hand-on learning, and gives open ended questions in extra practice booklets to challenge students. Math in Focus is also closely aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
